Our Community Project
What is our project?
Our project takes the opportunity to give something to the marginalised people with the support of students that like Cuban dance. Previously we have supported the destitute neighbourhood of Pogolotti, one of Havana’s most forgotten regions, and where Afro-Cuban cultural history is fiercely preserved. El Barrio de Pogolotti has been one of the venues for our Afro-Cuban Dance Festival’s closing parties and it has proven to be one of the participants’ favourite activities.
We decided to start gathering funds to transform a vacant garden area into a vast tiled floor, which would serve as the event’s concluding celebration. Throughout the rest of the year, the facility was regularly used by the local community. It has been turned into a small centre that now hosts a children’s play area and other community events.
We want to keep this collaboration going as the festival grows. Every year we ask students to bring some vital supplies like ibuprofen, paracetamol, plasters, Calpol, feminine pads, and other necessities. Because these items are not affordable to low-income Cubans. We send everything to a variety of groups, including schools, the families of the event’s teachers, and some of Luanda’s family and we are able to provide some help to many Cubans each year thanks to the partnership.
Nowadays, it is not always possible to bring much more when travelling, but anything is useful, and we recognise the importance of doing something extra to give back. It is not required, but if you have the opportunity, please participate.
As the festival grows, we could raise funds to support the Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba. If you have any ideas or want to develop them, please write to us at [email protected].
If you are unable to attend the festival but would like to contribute to this humble humanitarian activity, your assistance will be greatly appreciated by both the people in Cuba and us.
